About Our GroupInterested in joining the group? Our group generally operates around five principles:
Encouraging creativity and curiosity:We work collaboratively to come up with world-changing ideas. We welcome different perspectives within our own group and with collaborators to leverage interdisciplinary approaches to tackle challenging environmental problems. We facilitate formal and informal discussions as critical drivers for curiosity-driven inquiries that lead to creative solutions.
Cultivating humility and self-awareness: We reflect not just on our scientific results, but the way that we work to achieve them. Our team is a major part of our scientific growth and success. We welcome feedback from one another, aim to reflect on our own behavior, and contribute meaningfully to helping each other reach our full potential. We also focus on collective success over individual success.
Conducting research with passion and integrity: We are committed to our work and the research vision behind it, as well as doing so with the highest standards of scientific and personal integrity. We report failure with the same rigor as success, and seek to use our resources to help others (e.g., research partners, trainees, mentees, campus, our surrounding neighborhoods) as much as possible. We prioritize the quality and integrity of our research outputs over the rate at which we produce them.
Making plans, but being flexible: We thrive on making plans, but also acknowledge that circumstances can change. We are ambitious and driven, but flexible; we tend to try out new ways of meeting and organizing ourselves, with the understanding that, much like design, iterative improvement can accelerate optimization.
Treating each other with respect and empathy: We assume the best in each other, and are firmly committed to facilitating the growth and contributions of every single lab member. We seek to not only be a tolerant group, but one that champions our members, advances their careers, and celebrates their achievements.
❋ Graduate studentsPlease apply to the department of your choice. Because group selection generally happens after admission, PI Tarpeh focuses on email correspondence with accepted graduate students. Due to high email volumes, please do not be discouraged if pre-acceptance inquiries are not answered. One exception is CEE PhD students, who are invited to email upon application.
❋ Postdoctoral researchersPlease contact PI Tarpeh for guidance on open positions in the group, and include a CV and a cover letter describing specific interests in ongoing projects. Applicants are encouraged to consider fellowship programs like the Stanford Energy Postdoc Fellowship, Beckman Fellowship, and the Stanford PRISM program. Due to high email volumes, please do not be discouraged if inquiries are not answered. If funding availability changes, PI Tarpeh may respond at a later date.
❋ Undergraduate researchersStanford undergraduates can reach out to PI Tarpeh by email or come to department office hours to discuss open research positions. Generally, students take 1 unit of research (~3 hours per week) for one quarter to evaluate fit and interest in the group. Subsequent quarters, including honors theses, can involve more units.
Undergraduates from other universities are welcome to apply for summer research programs, including SURF (School of Engineering) and SURGE (Doerr School of Sustainability.
